Wargrave House launches a supported internship programme

Wargrave House School and LEAP College in Newton-le-Willows has offered one student a supported internship programme. 

With the support of St Helens local authority and the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), the school has been able to offer current student, Will, a supported internship within the school and college from September 2020. 

As part of the programme, Will and the college have agreed to participate in a DWP case study to measure the impact of this employment pathway and share the outcomes with ministers, government departments and external organisations. 

The student will be supported by a job coach who will liaise directly between Will and Wargrave House to ensure that he is provided with the most appropriate level of work to develop his employability skills and resilience.  

Julliet Doherty, head of post–16 learning, said: “Supporting employability is a key theme through-out the Post 16 Provision at Wargrave House Specialist Autism Provision. The young adults are given every opportunity to develop life and work skills across a bespoke curriculum that is innovative and challenging in order to exceed the students EHCP outcomes and develop their confidence and self–esteem.  

“Wargrave House Autism Specialist Provision is always looking at ways to improve quality of life for their young people and explore new courses of action that will improve and future proof all opportunities available.”
