Breathtaking festive event promises to light up the whole family’s hearts this Christmas at Liverpool Cathedral

Get ready for the magic of The Light Before Christmas: Starlight as it returns to Liverpool Cathedral from Friday 29 November until Saturday 7 December, following two years of sold-out success.

This beloved event will be back, bigger and brighter than ever, lighting up one of Liverpool’s most iconic landmarks in celebration of its centenary year.

Prepare to be dazzled by a brand-new, immersive light and sound experience created by the internationally renowned Luxmuralis team. Peter Walker, sculptor and creative director of Luxmuralis, said: “We are delighted to return to create our third Christmas light show in the cathedral. The partnership we have together helps us create one of the largest immersive experiences anywhere in the world, and to welcome tens of thousands of visitors.

“Starlight will bring the cathedral to life with light and sound art on an epic scale, and will be a wonderful experience for families and people of all ages. Indeed it’s becoming a bit of a tradition in Liverpool to visit and experience the cathedral in a different light each year in the build up to Christmas.”

The cathedral’s historic architecture will become a backdrop for the sensory experience where visitors will step into a breathtaking visual journey that invites people to follow the star and experience the Nativity story in an entirely new way. With stunning projections and captivating soundscapes, it promises to be a magical, family-friendly event that will capture the hearts of young and old alike.

Due to overwhelming demand last year, Liverpool Cathedral has added an extra Saturday to the schedule, giving visitors even more opportunities to create unforgettable festive memories. To complete the experience, the Welsford Bistro in the cathedral will be offering a delicious festive Christmas market-style menu, perfect for warming up while soaking in the sights.

Marvel as light transforms the stunning architecture of the country’s largest cathedral into a luminous wonderland, with spectacular Christmas imagery projected onto the front elevation and the interior walls. Whether guests are admiring the grand design of the building or being swept away by the holiday spirit, this Son et Lumiere show will leave people enchanted while they wonder around one of the city’s most iconic buildings.

The Very Revd Dr Sue Jones, dean of Liverpool, said: “We are delighted to see the return of the Light Before Christmas for its third year. We know how it has become a Christmas tradition for so many families, so we asked Luxmuralis to return with a brand new story to celebrate our centenary year.”

“The Light Before Christmas: Starlight will offer visitors a different way of engaging with the Nativity story that people enjoy and love. It offers the perfect opportunity for people of all ages to come together and enjoy a festive experience.”

Alissa Koopal, the cathedral’s newly appointed director of enterprise, added: “We are delighted to continue to team up with the incredibly talented artists at Luxmuralis, to produce another year of the much-anticipated Light before Christmas show.

“The 2024 edition Starlight allows audiences from near and far the unique experience to explore Liverpool Cathedral and the Nativity story in a way like no other. And we are so pleased that this unique immersive experience has become a true highlight in so many people’s Christmas celebrations.”
