Summer reads and photo inspired writing in Knowsley

Young readers in Knowsley have celebrated the books that got them through the summer.

Knowsley Library Service runs an annual Summer reading challenge to encourage children to keep reading during the school holidays. It involves reading six books over the long break. Now in its 15th year, over 650 children took part this summer.

The theme was ‘Mythical Maze’ and there were crafts, games and story times in the borough’s libraries as well as stickers, bookmarks, key rings and wristbands to collect.

All those who completed the challenge received a medal and certificate at their local library.

Children from each library also attended a borough wide celebration in Kirkby Library.

Halewood Church of England School received the Summer Reading Challenge Cup for the school with the most pupils completing the challenge.

Cllr Eddie Connor, Knowsley’s cabinet member for leisure, community and culture, said: “It’s really important we encourage our children to keep up with their reading over the long summer break, as well as keeping them entertained it helps maintain and promote a greater interest in books.”

Knowsley’s writing competition was also launched at the event. Adults and children are asked to submit a piece inspired by a photograph of their choice.

The winner and runners-up in each category will receive a book gift card. There’s also a prize for the most outstanding entry.

The closing date is Monday 31 January 2015 and the winner will be announced on World Book Day in March 2015. Full details are available on the council’s website.
