Students and staff at St Mary’s College elated with A-level results

Students and staff at St Mary’s College in Crosby are once again celebrating excellent A-level results this summer.

These are the first public examinations since 2019 before the pandemic.

Continuing the high standards set in previous years, the ‘class of 2022’ recorded a 99 per cent pass rate, with almost a third of students achieving three or more A*, A or B grades.

An additional 13 per cent of students achieved three or more A* or A grades.

17-year-old head boy, Jack Miller, from Formby, achieved four A* passes in history, physics, maths and further maths.

Jack is going to Oxford University to study philosophy, politics and economics (PPE). 

Jack said: “I am really delighted, and relieved, and can’t wait to move on to the next stage of my journey at Oxford. 

“I’d like to extend a massive thanks to all my teachers at St. Mary’s College for everything they’ve done for me during my time here.”

18-year-old Head Girl Eleanor Newton from Southport also did exceptionally well in the exams, achieving three A* passes in biology, classics and maths plus an A in chemistry. 

Eleanor plans to study medicine at Newcastle University.

She said: “It’s been an unforgettable journey and I will take lots of happy memories with me as I head off to Newcastle. 

“I’m incredibly proud of all I have achieved, and I couldn’t have done it without the support of everyone at St. Mary’s. 

“It really is a special place with a unique vibe.”

Meanwhile there was an extra birthday present for Lydia Whitehouse from Leyland who turned 18 on results day. 

Lydia achieved three A* passes in history, maths, and further maths plus an A in physics and is going on to study economics and philosophy at UCL (University College London).

Lydia commented: “I’m so thankful to the staff for helping me reach a standard I didn’t know I could attain. These results have been the best 18th birthday present I could have wished for.”

Other students among this year’s A-level cohort include Evie Clark, aged 18 from Crosby.

Evie’s two A* passes and two A grades have won her a place at inventor and designer James Dyson’s private Dyson Institute of Engineering and Technology in Wiltshire.

Evie said: “I’m ecstatic with my results and would like to thank everyone in the St Mary’s community who has helped me over the past 18 years as I made my way from the baby room at Bright Sparks through to St Mary’s Prep and all the way through St Mary’s College. 

“I am looking forward to continuing my studies at the Dyson Institute, where I will be doing a degree apprenticeship in engineering.”

And another happy student, 18-year-old Theo Williams from Parbold, will be studying for a degree in history and will then head to the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst to train as a British Army officer.

Commenting on this summer’s results, St Mary’s College Principal Mike Kennedy said: “We are very proud of all our students who have worked incredibly hard to achieve success this summer despite the challenges they have faced over recent years due to coronavirus.

“They deserve credit for their hard work, resilience and positivity, and we congratulate them on this excellent set of exam results.

“They’re a wonderful group of young people and obviously we’re very sorry to see them go, but we wish them all every success in the wide range of future educational and career paths they have chosen.”

Mr Kennedy added that staff at St Mary’s were also delighted with the value-added performance of candidates this summer, with many students beating their predicted grades, proof once again of the excellent progress that students make at the school.
