Rainford High students embark on confidence-building adventure at Rock and River

Students from Rainford High’s Core Curriculum group recently enjoyed an exciting trip to Rock and River Outdoor Pursuits in Mawdesley, Lancashire.
The Core Curriculum provision provides bespoke education and support for students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), enabling them to succeed both academically and in their personal development.
The adventure to Rock and River was designed to help foster friendships among students, encourage them to step out of their comfort zones, and build key life skills such as confidence, resilience, and teamwork.
The group took part in a range of activities aimed at boosting their physical fitness, helping them try new experiences, and building connections with others. Activities included archery, lighting fires, canoeing and fun games on the lake.
Student Ben Saniford commented: “My favourite was archery. It was my first time doing it and I hit the target every time.”
The trip was also an excellent opportunity to link the experience to their geography curriculum by exploring the local area. Most importantly, students learned about water safety – a vital skill that was woven into the day’s activities.
The day ended with a splash as several staff members, along with a few brave students, leapt into the lake, much to the delight of everyone.
Student James Quirk said: “My favourite part was the canoeing because I got to splash the teachers.”
Principal of Rainford High, Mr Ian Young said: “This trip was an incredible opportunity for our Core Curriculum students to grow in confidence, build friendships, and develop essential life skills in a fun and supportive environment.
“We are extremely proud of their achievements and grateful to the staff at Rock and River for helping to make this such a memorable experience for everyone involved.”
Speaking about the day, manager at Rock and River Outdoor Pursuits, Danny Taylor, added: “A lovely bunch of young people who attended and the staff were great too – it put a smile on my face.”
