New careers sessions for budding animal keepers and beyond

Responding to an increase in the green jobs market, Knowsley Safari is offering new careers sessions for budding animal keepers and more.

The taster sessions, designed for 11 to 16-year-olds, aim to highlight the wide range of jobs available in safaris and zoos.

Conservation is, of course, at the heart of Knowsley Safari. However, there are a whole host of other roles that make the business function on a day-to-day basis too, from animal keepers and educators, to security, catering, retail, and maintenance jobs.

Up to 35 students will be able to attend each session to engage in career discussions and interactive activities such as using microchip scanners to identify individual animals within a species group, recommending treatments for sick animals and preparing feed for meerkats using scales and food props.

The activities on offer will allow students to develop a variety of new skills and also enhance their teamwork and problem-solving abilities.

The launch of the sessions will take place at All About STEM’s Experience of the Workplace event at Liverpool Hope University on Monday 10 March, with the 45-minute sessions available to young people on-site at Knowsley’s dedicated Safari School between September 2024-April 2025.

Ben Poole, school supervisor at Knowsley Safari, said: “Our learning and discovery sessions for key stage one and two children have been running for some time and are always so popular, so now it’s wonderful to be able to develop a programme specifically for older students, who are giving serious thought about their future career paths.

“The sessions are available for schools to book now for the next academic year. We’re so excited to be inspiring the next generation of animal keepers, conservationists, caterers and beyond.”

Sessions are priced at £12.95 per student, with an optional guided tour of the safari bookable for an additional cost. Schools looking to book can email learning@knowlsey.com to find out further information.
