Liverpool students commemorate liberation of Auschwitz on Holocaust Memorial Day
Students from Alsop High School in Liverpool laid a wreath to remember the victims of genocide as part of the Holocaust Memorial Day 2025 commemorations at the memorial stone in St John’s Gardens.
Alsop students then attended a civic service at Liverpool Town Hall. During the service, students delivered a presentation to commemorate the liberation of Auschwitz.
The theme of Holocaust Memorial Day 2025 is ‘for a better future’. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenhau.
This year also marks the 30th anniversary of the genocide in Bosnia.
The Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Councillor Richard Kemp CBE, spoke about why everyone needs to be together for a better future and challenge racism and hatred. Rabbi Natan Fagleman from Allerton Hebrew Congregation led prayers and lit a candle to remember those who perished during the Holocaust.
The service also included an act of commitment from the leaders of Merseyside Christian churches. Church leaders made a solemn pledge to eradicate all forms of racism and hatred from society.

“As we remember the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, it is so important to stand together and challenge hatred in all its forms. We must never forget those who perished during the Holocaust and work together to build a society based upon respect and fairness.”
