Inspirational start to Mosspits’ Health Week
Mosspits Primary School started its Health and Well-being Week yesterday (Monday 20), as the school took part in a Disability Awareness Day.
The week long activities are all centred around health, with the first day focused on disability and mental health awareness and educating the children on people’s different needs.
The day began with pro skateboarder Neil Danns delivering an inspirational assembly where children watched footage of his incredible career. Next up, the children learnt about invisible illnesses and discussed the mental health needs of disability.
Different types of sport were enjoyed on the day including a lively session of Boccia, dance and dodgeball.
Staff from Alder Hey Children’s Hospital used creative props to show the effects of asthma and children took part in a group massage session where they were taught different relaxation techniques.
As well as a day of sport, the children had time to reflect on their learning by writing their thoughts on the morning’s assembly and creating blogs about the day’s events.
Louise Warn, Year 5 teacher and school sport lead, says: “Disability Awareness Day is part of our health week. We’ve decided to do this to make the children aware of people all around us who have these needs and raise awareness of how they can help their peers, family members and people in their community.
“We are looking at mental health needs, physical needs, learning awareness and mental health awareness.
“We hope the week will be a stepping stone for the children to not only get involved in sport outside of school life and to be inspired to take part in sport with empathy for others, but we also hope they will have an appreciation of disability sports and disability athletes as well.”
