Full house for a hair-raising night at the bingo

Sacred Heart College art teacher Mrs Murphy celebrated losing at the bingo, as she shed more than 40cm of hair for charity.

As part of a special comedy bingo event, held at the college in January, Miss Murphy let fellow art teacher, Mrs Campbell, loose on her locks.

The impromptu haircut had the desired effect, being as it has raised more than £500 for music teacher, Isabel Morison’s ‘letsdothisforisabel’ campaign. Isabel is a teacher at the school who is diagnosed with a rare type of brain cancer.

The college’s on-going charity drive is helping to try and raise the funds for potentially lifesaving treatment in the US.

Miss Murphy said: “It was a bit of a last minute decision to have it cut on the night but it was well worth it to boost the fund.

“I’ve been growing it for a long time, so it was a bit nerve wracking but Mrs Campbell did a quick job and chopped my pony tail off in one go.

“I’m following Isabel’s example and donating my hair to The Little Princess Trust, who make wigs for children who have had cancer treatment and lost their hair so, hopefully, this will make a difference to others too.”

As well as Miss Murphy’s hair-raising gesture, there was also a night of comedy and bingo.

The event was well supported by people from the wider college community including many from our partner primary schools, as well as staff, parents, friends and family of Sacred Heart.

Miss Murphy added: “We have had fantastic feedback from those who came to the event about what a fun night it was.

“We raised more than £2,600 on the night with donations still coming in.

“Thanks to everyone who has supported it in any way and especially Miss Clarke, Miss Campbell and Ms Yoxall for their organisation of the event and Mr Foy, Mr O’Malley, Mrs Bennett and everyone else who helped on the night.”

Further events are planned, including a night’s entertainment in March from local singer Jak Dexter.
