Choosing your GCSE options: “Choose subjects which engage you”

In this series, Educate asks local students to blog about their GCSE options experience. Jessica Reid, a year 9 student at St Julie’s shares her choices and advice for choosing options which you love.

For my GCSE options I picked History, Triple Science and Sociology. I chose these subjects as all three interest me and I am hoping to have a career in Law or Forensic Science.
So far, I have found all three very interesting as you learn topics that you have never studied before. At first I thought Sociology would be extremely difficult as I had never had a lesson of it before last September however, my teacher made the subject fun and helped us understand fully.
“My advice would be to do some research. Look into the careers that you have in mind to see what qualifications you are required to have.”
As I move on into year 10 and 11, I am hoping to continue to enjoy all three subjects I opted for because they will help me to get my dream career in the field of law. I have loved studying all of them so far and extending my knowledge which I hope continues into the future. The teachers at St Julie’s make the transition from KS3 – KS4 really accessible – and fun, at times too!
To all who are going to choose their options soon, my advice would be to do some research. Look into the careers that you have in mind to see what qualifications you are required to have, however, choose subjects which engage you and make you eager to learn more. If you find a subject that you enjoy and are good at, you will continue to enjoy up until year 11 when you complete your GCSE studies.
After my GCSEs I plan to go on to Sixth Form and continue my studies in History. I am unsure, however, what school I will go to or any other subjects that I will study.
I hope to have many more opportunities to extend my knowledge and hope to do well in my studies at the end of year 11.
