Cheshire school finalists in nationwide competition

On 27 November, What on Earth! Magazine hosted its second national What on Earth! Schools Quiz Challenge, in association with media partner ‘i’, aimed at identifying the school with the best general knowledge in the country.

Schools across the UK signed up for free and each participating school entered a 4-person team to compete. The final eight schools, four primary and four secondary, made their way to Stationers’ Hall, London, for the thrilling live final. One North West secondary school, Weaverham High School in Cheshire, came second in the secondary school category.

Hosted by Christopher Lloyd, author and founder of What on Earth! Magazines, he was thrilled to announce ‘Wymondham Wizards’ from Wymondham High Academy in Norfolk were the What on Earth! Schools Quiz Champions 2023.

They faced stiff competition as over the last few weeks school teams have been furiously preparing for the championship. All quiz questions were inspired by topics covered in past editions of What on Earth! Magazine including mind boggling and amazing facts, extraordinary feats and awe-inspiring true-life stories. Each participating school received free access to past digital editions of the magazine to help their students become quiz champions.

After all school teams had competed in the online quiz rounds, the four finalist teams invited to compete in the live final for the primary school’s category (8 – 11 year olds) were Magdalen College Junior, Oxford; Edge Grove School, Hertfordshire; Thorn Grove Primary, Bishop’s Stortford; Westbourne Prep School, Penarth, Wales and the four finalist teams for the secondary school’s category (11 – 14 year olds) were Weaverham High School; Loreto College, St Alban’s; Wymondham High Academy, Norfolk; and Soham Village College, Cambridgeshire.

The day began with all of the teams competing in group rounds to see who would make it through to the final head-to-head rounds. Thorn Grove Primary, Bishop’s Stortford and Loreto College, St Alban’s took 4th place and Westbourne Prep School, Penarth, Wales and Soham Village College, Cambridgeshire took 3rd place for their age categories.

Magdalen College Junior, Oxford and Edge Grove School, Hertfordshire then battled it out for first place in the primary school category with Edge Grove School taking first place and then Weaverham High School, Cheshire and Wymondham High Academy, Norfolk competed for the top spot in the secondary category with Wymondham High Academy winning.

With the highest overall score in the quiz, ‘Wymondham Wizards’ from Wymondham High Academy were presented with their trophy and named the What on Earth! Schools Quiz Champions 2023.

A member of the Wymondham Wizards, Wydmondham High champion team said “It’s been one of the fun-ist things I have done all year. It’s been very enjoyable for everyone here.”

Christopher Lloyd, founder and CEO of What on Earth! Magazines and quiz master, said: “Our second national quiz final has been a huge success, and I have been thoroughly impressed with the dedication and enthusiasm of our young quizzers during the last few weeks of preparation and competitions.

“A huge thanks to all the schools across the UK who took part and congratulations to the finalists on the day and, of course, the overall quiz champions, ‘Wymondham Wizards’ from Wymondham High Academy – I am already looking forward to finding our new UK schools quiz champions for 2024!”
