Aspiring scientists attend UK Imaging and Oncology Congress
A group of aspiring medicine students from Alsop High School in Liverpool recently participated in the national UK Imaging and Oncology conference at the ACC Liverpool. Students heard NHS representatives speak about career pathways in the NHS and were able to speak with experts from the medical profession.
The UK Imaging and Oncology Congress was held at the ACC Liverpool. This multidisciplinary scientist congress brought together a host of speakers from the medical profession. It included informative workshops demonstrating latest technological developments in healthcare. Students from Alsop were invited to meet and hear from these professionals as well as participate in an interactive exhibition.
Students first heard from Haris Shuaib, a consultant clinical scientist and head of the clinical scientific computing section at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.
Haris spoke of his love of physics and the enjoyment of using imaging to diagnose medical conditions. He also talked about his quest to integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the diagnostics process to speed up diagnosis.
Salma Yasmeen, CEO of Sheffield Health and Social Care NHS Trust, also delivered a keynote speech. She spoke about her life experiences and how taking on opportunities led her to a role she did not imagine when she first became a mental health nurse.
Mr Mulvaney, from Alsop’s science faculty, said: “This was a fabulous experience for Alsop students. During the interactive exhibitions students were able to see the science behind some of the machines used to diagnose conditions and even use a small hand-held scanner.
“At the start of the day hardly anyone knew what a radiologist was, by the end of the day a good few of our students wanted to be one!”
