Christmas is on the cards at Winstanley College

With Christmas just weeks away, it was time for Winstanley College to ask students to get creative and try their hand at designing the annual official college card.

Ben Rutherford, the college’s enrichment officer, coordinated the competition which was open to all students.

Ben said: It felt particularly poignant to mark the end of an extraordinary year and so the 2020 card needed to be an extra special design.

Dozens of entries were received and the designs were put to the judging panel including the head of art, Stefan Isaacson and college principal, Louise Tipping.

Competition was tough and in the end the judges couldn’t choose between two designs and so it was decided that this year there would be two cards in circulation.

Lower sixth student, Lilly Green from Standish was the overall winner with her witty and festive depiction of 2020. The card features a reindeer in a face mask and the words ‘Oh Deer, What a Year’. Lilly’s card will be sent out to parents, students and other associates of the college as the official college card.

Meanwhile Joseph Cooper, also lower sixth and from Billinge, was selected as ‘community winner’. Joseph arranged for children who live on Winstanley Road (where the college is located) to draw an image each for the 12 days of Christmas.  He then used his talent to put all the images together into a winning design. The judges were impressed by the effort and community spirit that had gone into it and decided that the card will be sent out to neighbours of the college and local primary schools.

Louise Tipping said: “We’ve had some fabulous entries this year and it was difficult to narrow it down but we are really happy with our two winners. These 2020 cards will be a collector’s item in years to come! Congratulations to Lilly and Joseph and thank you to all the children of our road who took the time to help create the card.
