“A sea of smiles” at St Margaret’s CE Academy

For the second successive week, students from St Margaret’s Church of England Academy have been celebrating success in external examinations. This week it’s the turn of Year 11 students to collect their GCSE and BTEC results.

Once again, the Aigburth School has beaten national averages. 57% of pupils achieved at least a ‘strong pass’ in both English and Maths, up from 55% last year, and above the national average (which was 40% in 2018).

73% achieved at least a ‘standard pass’ in both subjects, again beating 2018’s national average.  And very provisional data appears to show that overall, St Margaret’s boys have made more progress from their starting-points than other boys nationally.

Student Josh McNaught achieved 9s in Biology, Chemistry, Maths, Music, Physics and Statistics, an 8 in Religious Studies, 7 in History and 6s in English and English Literature.

Matthew Erickson bagged a 9 in PE, 8s in Maths, Biology and Chemistry, 7s in English, Physics and Religious Studies, 6 in Electronics and a 5 in English Literature.

Fellow student Michael Orme secured 9s in Maths and Chemistry, 8s in Biology, English and Physical Education, 7s in English Literature, French, Physics, Religious Studies, and Statistics.

Principal Stephen Brierley said: “This set of results is a fantastic achievement by all concerned. I am thrilled that our Year 11 students have matched their Year 13 colleagues in achieving such excellent results. Congratulations to all our pupils, and many thanks too to all the teachers and support staff who have helped make these results possible.”

A number of subjects have produced strong results, but Mr Brierley singled out the Science results as being a particular highlight. “A large number of students have achieved top grades in Science this year, which is great news!” he said.  “But across all our subjects – and across the ability range too – there are stories of St Margaret’s students who have exceeded expectations. We celebrate all our boys’ achievements today – we’re proud of each and every one of you!”

Mr Brierley expects that today’s great results will encourage more students to apply for places in the Sixth Form.

He added: “We still have places in next year’s Year 12, and applicants don’t need to go to church to join us.  If any prospective students are interested in becoming part of our highly successful Sixth Form, do get in touch: enrolment starts today!”
