Celebrating maths for life day
St John Fisher Catholic Primary School, Knowsley recently held a ‘maths for life’ day and invited parents and other guests to come in to the school and speak to the children about how maths is important to them in their lives and jobs.
There were doctors, nurses, builders, vets and air cabin crew managers. They also had Helen Jones from BBC Radio Merseyside talking about maths as a DJ and who also interviewed the schools maths champions for her radio show.
Mr Franny Norton, a well-known jockey, discussed maths in horse racing – weights and distance measurements are particularly important, not to mention knowing about ratio when working out odds!
Headteacher, Michelle Forrest said: “The school posted a question on twitter about the event and received replies from authors Francesca Simon (Horrid Henry) and Anthony Horowitz (Stormbreaker/Diamond Brothers/Young Sherlock Holmes).
“This is in addition to lots of work with the children throughout the year to help them see that maths is not just a subject in isolation; it’s a skill that everyone needs every day of their lives.
“St John Fisher is also working toward the gold LCQM Award (Liverpool Counts Quality Mark)”.
