A testament to hard work

Students and staff at St Mary’s College in Crosby are celebrating another excellent set of GCSE results this year.

A fifth of candidates achieved ten or more A* or A grades and well over a third (39 per cent) achieved seven or more passes at the highest grades.

The school also recorded a rise – to 94 per cent – in the number of students achieving five A*-C grades, including English and maths.

Student Lily McGuire, from Southport, proved herself to be top of the class with an impressive ten A* grades plus an A and a B.

Lily said: “I’m ecstatic about my results – I still can’t believe it. On my way to school I was saying to myself As and Bs will be fine, but when I opened the envelope and saw my grades I was speechless.

“I never thought I had it in me but my teachers here at St Mary’s changed all that. I am really grateful for their support and that all my efforts have paid off.”

Lily will join the sixth form at St Mary’s next month where she plans to study mathematics, chemistry, history and music.

St Mary’s College principal, Mike Kennedy, said: “I am delighted with these results which are a testament both to the hard work of our pupils, and the support they have received from staff and parents throughout their time at the school.

“The high percentage of passes at A* or A grade is particularly pleasing, and shows that our students have the academic strength in depth to do well in future at A-level, at university and in their chosen careers.

“All our students and their families should be very proud of what they have achieved, and I am sure they will be celebrating their many successes over the next few days”.
